About Me

My name is Andrew Schepers and I am from a little town of 400 people in the middle of Nebraska.  When I was in the second grade my family moved to Kearney, Nebraska, which was a little bigger, and that is where I went to school until the 8th grade.  My freshman and half my sophomore years were spent at a private school in New England until I returned back to graduate from Kearney High.  One month after high school I was in the Navy were I spent the next 4 years horsing around.  When I got out of the Navy I began going to Palomar College and then transferred to CSUSM.  While at CSUSM I studied abroad at the University of Costa Rica.  I recently finished my degree in History with a minor in Spanish and now I am trying to get into the credential program.  School has always been hard for me and it took a lot of time and effort to get to where I am.

I am behind on the technological curve.  I just recently got a cell phone about 5 months ago and unlike many people I can live without it, hence I am always losing it or leaving it behind.  People always asked how I lived without a cellphone for so long and the answer is simple, the same way everyone lived without one for time in memorial before hand.  I have always had an intrinsic fear of computers since I was a child for example our family's Commodore 64 would chase me around in my nightmares, which were just a hellish Pit Fall like dream sequence taken right out of an Atari Cartridge.  I don't facespace, my book, or twerp because I don't have any friends who do.  Come to think of it, I don't have any friends.  I enjoy what technology has done for me in the realm of online gambling, and in following sports in general.  I also like the ease that Google has allowed me in calling people on their BS.  Being outside of the technological loop and not owning a cell phone for so long has allowed me to see some of the ill effects that technology has had on people around me, but everything carries it good and bad.  My biggest turn off is the manner in which people address each other electronically.  People will say the worst things and get into online shouting matches over the stupidest things.  Some people still need to learn to filter themselves before they go on the attack.  I am just sad that I didn't have angry birds when my parents dragged me to boring activities like high school band concerts, cross country car rides, and church.

I think that the part about advancing professional practices is important because as someone who struggled under the old school system of education with some fossil teachers, I think education should advance along with the rest of society.  the mission statement really wasn't a factor in my applying to CSUSM as much as location and convenience were a factor.

  2. Andrew, I enjoyed learning a bit about you. I think it's neat that you've had the opportunity to study abroad and minor in Spanish. I also find it nice that you are continuing so much with your education even though school hasn't been a strong suit for you. That's encouraging for many people.
